Family Photography in Hampstead – A morning with a one year-old baby
I was so happy to go back to photograph babies in their homes and their routines.
Did you know that daily routines help babies thrive?
Doing the same thing every day may be dull and tedious for adults, but for toddlers and small kids, it helps them have a sense of security, control, and time. A predictable routine reduces the stress for children because they know what’s going to happen next in their day and makes them develop a sense of mastery in handling their lives.
Routines are also beneficial to parents! Life with children can feel overwhelming pretty quickly. With a daily family schedule set in place, adults caring for small children can get things done and spend quality time together. They’ll also feel more confident and in charge.
I was lucky to photograph the morning routine of this family with their 1-year old boy. I was there from the moment he woke up, and I saw how he eased into the day. No tears, no tantrums. He eagerly participated in all their activities and was genuinely interested in each of them. I can clearly see healthy habits like brushing and washing hands were also into his routine.
The baby loved playtime and storytime with his parents and was delighted to play with the cat. The family also briefly went out for a walk, allowing the kid to explore and experiment with his surroundings. You see, a routine does not have to be rigid. It should also enable the child to make his own decisions and choices about using his time. You can consider this as a time for an adventure or a learning experience.
It was also lovely to see the parents bond with each other when the baby was napping! It’s essential to set aside some time for you and your partner to talk and connect every day. And using your baby’s nap time is a great hack! Plus, these connective moments make for really cherished images.
I was funny to see as soon the parents sat down after putting the baby for a nap, the cat came straight away to enjoy some quality time with the adults.
A routine does not have to be complicated. Have a sequence of activities set out like wake up, dress, breakfast, playtime, chores, nap, and you’re done. You don’t have to be precise about the time. Most importantly, it would help if you did not force your kid into a routine that isn’t working. You don’t have to base your routine on anyone else’s. Make a schedule based on your needs and what works for your family.
I love documenting families as to how they live. Years from now, the family can look back at this set of photos and see how their routines change, how their daily lives have slowly evolved. They’ll have a detailed visual representation of how life was before school, before puberty, or before teenage life.
Want to have your family photos taken? You can do it without making things complicated or planning out the day. I can capture you in your home, doing your usual daily activities. Even if you spend the day taking it easy, I promise you there will be a lot to photograph. I’ll capture the subtle moments and the details in your typical day that are totally worth photographing.
I’m Ana Ruivo – an award-winning London family photographer. I am specialized in family and baby photography. Since 2013 I have photographed hundreds of clients from all over the world, all the UK and the USA, Spain, France, Portugal, New Zealand, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, UAE and Hong Kong.
My view of documentary family and baby photography is that it is unscripted, unposed, and records what happens naturally. I’ll come to your home, or meet you at the park or at brunch, wherever you choose, and just take photos as you and your family or friends interact just as you would on a day when a photographer was not present. I will not ask you to pose, sit still, “say cheese”, or pretend anything. There is no pretending, this is your life, documented. Let the kids be kids, Dad does his thing, and Mum just enjoy the experience.
I want these photos to capture the true essence of your family, your relationships, the stage of your life you are currently experiencing. I want it to be real, in all its tantrum-ing, messy, teary, silly, beautiful glory. I want to capture this chapter in your story so that you can look and remember exactly how it looked and felt at this very moment.
Your family has a story, many stories actually to tell, and I believe they should be preserved.
