The Investment in Photography – 3 Reasons Why It’s So Important

Family-London-Photography-Children-Kids-Photographer

The Investment in Photography.

Sometimes, it’s hard to slow down and enjoy the simple moments with our kids in this fast-paced world. Bike rides around the neighbourhood, ice cream dates, or even reading bedtime stories may be neglected. It is easy to get caught up in the rush of whatever we are doing and forget to enjoy our children. That’s why a family photo hanging on the wall is essential. It can be a great reminder to delight at the moment and capture them. That’s the investment in photography.

The question is, is hiring a professional documentary family photographer an investment? Is it worth spending our hard-earned money on? Or is it just another luxury that we don’t need?
I’m a firm believer that a documentary family photo shoot is an excellent investment that the family can’t do without. Here are three reasons why:

It’s an investment in the future.

Every parent knows that kids grow too fast, but we don’t really feel it until the moment has passed. A family photography session can document the precious time for you! A great documentary photographer brings more than just good lighting; they can bring context to an image, evoke all five senses, and show you the moments you are probably missing.

Think of all the changes that can happen in a year. Capturing those memories, no matter how insignificant they may seem at the moment, can be nostalgic to look back. A professionally taken photo is a lovely way of preserving a precious moment in time for generations to come.

It’s an investment in your children.

Celebrate your kids and their milestones! Forget about the frustrating sessions that only make your kids bored or grumpy. Investing in a documentary-style shoot makes it fun for your kids and the whole family. You can plan a simple activity like going to the park, or you can just stay at home and go about your daily routine. This shoot won’t feel like a chore.

Moreover, your kids will thank you for it in the future! They’ll remember memories that may have been lost since they were still too young when they happened. It will also make them feel loved, valued, and wanted.

It’s an investment in you and your partner.

Let’s face it; parenting is a tough job. It’s a 24/7 post with no breaks and no vacation. Even when our kids are asleep or when we are away for a while, we still worry about them. The things we do day-to-day are rarely noticed nor appreciated. But that doesn’t always have to be the case.

Investing in a documentary family photography session is a chance for you and your partner to be in front of the camera finally. It’s a celebration of your parenthood and a reminder that you are doing great. It’s proof that you were there too!

Investment in Photography

For the reasons stated above, you should keep in mind to hire the photographer that best fits your needs instead of looking out for the “best deal” in the market.

You don’t want to spend money on someone who’ll give you awkward, stressful, and stiff-looking photos, do you? For a genuinely fun and relaxed session that you, your partner, and your kids will love, send me a message!

Your family has a story, many stories actually to tell, and I believe they should be preserved.

5 ways to celebrate International Women’s Day with your daughter

The 8th of March is regarded around the world as International Women’s Day. It’s the day when we celebrate the accomplishments, both big and small, of women worldwide and a perfect day to celebrate with your daughter.

    Mother-Child-Family-Chiswick-House-Gardens-London

Whether you want to teach her about her self-worth or the value of other women out there in the world, here are five activities you can do with your daughter to celebrate International Women’s Day.

    1. Watch a movie about a strong female lead.

There are TONS of movies out there showcasing a strong female lead. If you’re having trouble finding some kid-friendly ones, try these: Mulan, Madeline, Alice in Wonderland, Akeelah and the Bee. Not only are they kid-friendly, but it gives you an excellent opportunity to talk with your daughter about the importance the female character played in the movie and introduce her to this internationally celebrated day.

    2. Attend an event (even online)

Take your daughter to an exhibition of a female artist; attend an event in your area for International Women’s Day; take her to a festival or a play at the local theatre. Check on the International Women’s Day website to find an event near you.

    3. Read books

One of the best ways to educate and spark conversations with your kids is to read books. Fortunately, there are thousands of books out there written by incredible female authors or about strong women, so your choices are far from limited. To help you narrow it down, School Run found the best girl-empowering books for kids

    4. Learn and do

Pick a strong woman that inspires you and teach your daughter about her. If she was a painter like Georgia O’Keefe or Frida Khalo, learn about her painting style and mimic it. If she is a gymnast like Simone Biles, take your daughter to a gymnastics lesson or have one in your living room better yet. If she is a tennis player like Serena Williams, watch a few videos about her and then head out to the courts to play a few games yourself. There are so many incredible women with incredible talents. Take today to celebrate those women and try something new.

    5. Say, “Thank you”.

    Grant Family Hydepark 2019Sm 72

Pick a special woman in your or your child’s life to celebrate. It can be a grandmother, a teacher, a coach, a neighbour, or a lunch lady. Every woman deserves to be celebrated today, and there are a few who deserve a little something extra. So, write her a card, take her out to lunch, buy her flowers, or anything else you can think of that would make her feel special and loved. Most importantly, make sure she knows why she’s being celebrated.

Regardless of how you choose to celebrate today, make it a point to educate your daughter on women’s vital role in our world’s history. Not only does she need to realize the importance of female contributions, but she needs to see that she is essential and she can make a difference in this world. After all, our kids are the ones who will grow and transform our nation one day. So, let’s do our part and educate them on this International Women’s Day.

A smart woman learns from her failure, smiles during her lows and grows stronger when faced with challenges. You are one of them. Happy Women’s Day!

New Family Storytelling in Times of a Pandemic – 1 Year ON.

This Is Our Life2020 Anaruivo 3278

      What about family storytelling?

It’s been a year since the COVID-19 pandemic started, and it still continues to be a pressing problem in many parts of the world. While constantly thinking about our physical health, we are also feeling the emotional burden of the crisis and how it takes a toll on our mental wellbeing. Many things have changed, and we lost control of various aspects of our lives. Navigating in the “new normal” is a challenging and tiring task that consumes most of us.

For families with kids, going through life during the pandemic usually means homeschooling, working from home, online graduation or moving up ceremonies, giving up vacations and playdates, drive-by parties, and having less and less interaction from the outside world.

I actually put down my camera for two months because I was uninspired by the whole routine. Some of you may be guilty of this too. Instead of finding the time to do things since we are mostly at home, we lose our drive to continue our passion because nothing made sense. It was hard to find inspiration from all the bad news that surrounds us. And I don’t blame you.

London Family Photographer - Ana Ruivo Photography

But I refuse to drown in that mindset. I took a step back to re-assess what was happening and wanted to still find meaning in all this. I realized that my kids are still growing, and they are observing how I traverse these circumstances. I wanted to still live a purposeful life despite the changes and uncertainties that the virus has brought us.

Here’s the thing: life keeps going. It goes on during entire meal times at the dinner table or while taking your time to have breakfast with your kids, which doesn’t often happen pre-COVID. It goes on while thinking of what activities your kids will have tomorrow, spending time on Pinterest for inspiration, or just giving yourself a break and giving them the iPad for one whole day. It goes on while you’re looking at your kid’s smile and knowing how happy he is while blowing his candle during his intimate birthday celebration, not having to worry about guests. It goes on; no matter how slow we think the days are, life keeps going.

This Is Our Life2020 Anaruivo 3424

      A touchstone for family storytelling

This moment will be a touchstone for our kids, something they’ll remember when they get older. They’ll be sharing the stories with their kids, and they’ll be talking about it with their peers during reunions. It’ll be a memory of when the world was interrupted, and it doesn’t have to be a sad one. We, as parents, have the power to shape that story.

This Is Our Life2020 Anaruivo 3334

We can’t change what is happening in the world, but we can mould how our kids experience this. It is up to us to keep them engaged, available, and optimistic. But more importantly, it is also up to us to capture these moments for our family to look back on.

Focus on what you can control in life – how you spend your day-to-day with your family — document the slow, unhurried moments with your kids, spouse, and even pets. Capture them through the lens of a camera because this is still a stage in your life that you can’t get back. Click away from the challenges, the struggles, and the ups and downs. Do not let the time pass you by. Family storytelling must not fade.

This Is Our Life2020 Anaruivo 3442

      Enjoy the slow life.

A day in the Life Heartwarming Family Photoshoot in Kensington

On this dark and cold London day, Autumn looks so far away now, but this family photoshoot warms my heart.

        London-Family-Photoshoot-Kensington

This is the year, more than any other before, we see how important are the moments with our family and close ones. The little moments in between in our daily lives, the closeness and connection with our children are one thing we sometimes forget to capture and it is the most important to remember.

Check out other family photoshoot here.

If you want to give a family photoshoot a try, or if you have any questions about these types of sessions, please drop me a note – I’d love to continue the conversation.

        Family-London-Photoshoot-Children-Kids-Photographer

I’m Ana Ruivo – an award-winning London family photographer. Since 2013 I have photographed hundreds of clients from all over the world, all the UK and the USA Spain, France, Portugal, New Zealand, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, UAE and Hong Kong.

My view of documentary family photography is that it is unscripted, unposed, and records what happens naturally. I’ll come to your home, or meet you at the park or at brunch, wherever you choose, and just take photos as you and your family or friends interact just as you would on a day when a photographer was not present. I will not ask you to pose, sit still, “say cheese”, or pretend anything. There is no pretending, this is your life, documented. Let the kids be kids, Dad do his thing, and Mum just enjoy the experience.

I want these photos to capture the true essence of your family, your relationships, the stage of your life you are currently experiencing. I want it to be real, in all its tantrum-ing, messy, teary, silly, beautiful glory. I want to capture this chapter in your story so that you can look and remember exactly how it looked and felt at this very moment.

Your family has a story, many stories actually to tell, and I believe they should be preserved.

Sunday mornings and a farewell – London Family Photography

Morning routines sometimes are so underrated. We just want to do everything as quickly as possible and rush out of the house. But it is the little moments that make our lives and can intrinsic memories.

        London Family Photography

This was fun but at the same time emotional photo session. This family left London and went to NY so they wanted to remember their beloved home and also that the girls would never forget their time in London at their home where they were born and grew beautifully.

If you want to give a family documentary session a try, or if you have any questions about these types of sessions, please drop me a note – I’d love to continue the conversation.

Autumn in London – Hyde Park – Family Photography

Summer may be over; the days are getting shorter, the temperatures colder and rainy days in London are setting in. Embrace that back-to-school feeling and enjoy Autumn in London where the parks are bursting with warm colours perfect for long walks.

          Grant Family Hydepark 2019Sm 52

This family wanted to celebrate Autumn with an after school picnic in Hyde Park, and we were so fortunate with the weather. There was lots of running to get some pictures from these boys and the dog, who loves to pose, but it was completely worth it.

Check-out an another beautiful session during Autumn in Hyde Park here for some inspiration.

The world’s most celebrated contemporary glass artist is showcasing again his work against the stunning backdrop of Kew Gardens. It’s only two more weeks and I totally recommend for the kids.

My daughters absolutely loved it and wanted to come back.

            Ourlife2019 Summer 46 1

In the most biodiverse place in the world, you will see the perfect marriage of art, science and nature as Chihuly’s dazzling sculptures transform the Gardens and glasshouses into a contemporary outdoor gallery space.

The beautifully illustrated Chihuly Family Trail booklet will help children and their families engage with the exhibition and spark their imagination through games and fun tasks.

Families can pick up a free trail for the duration of the exhibition from the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art. The lovely booklet also makes a nice keepsake. Read more about it here.

5 Reasons You Must Include Your Pet In Your Family Photo Session

Professional family portraits are so important to capture. The photos can document growth, relive memories or milestones, and serve as a beautiful wall display on your family home. For most of us, the family unit includes more than just the grandparents, parents and children. It also includes our furry and feathery (or sometimes scaly) friends!

For those of you who have grown up with pets in their house, you know how special these companions are. Pets are part of the owner’s family and should be cherished as much as possible. They may have been around before your kids and they will be a huge part of your children’s childhood memories.  And for that understanding, I have listed five reasons why you must include your pet in your next family photo session.

London Documentary Family 2019 Anaruivophotography 93

              They are extremely amusing.

Don’t you love looking at photos or videos of animals on the internet? I most certainly do! They instantly put a smile on my face and gives me good energy. Imagine having those vibes on your family portrait. Plus, pets and kids create the most comic photos!

Notting Hill London Documentary Family Photographer - Ana Ruivo Photography

              You’ll have more fun!

It is certainly more fun having your pets in a documentary session. The kids can play with them and bring more life to your photos. The family dynamic may also change and create increased interaction among the family members.

Notting Hill London Documentary Family Photographer - Ana Ruivo Photography

You’ll get new types of pictures.

Unless your pet is a turtle, most pets like dogs and cats don’t stay in a particular setting. They’ll run and play around. For documentary photo sessions, you wouldn’t need to manage their behavior. In fact, it’ll be interesting to capture the expressive side of your pets! On the other hand, you can also show off the commands and tricks that you’ve been patiently teaching them. This will allow you to get different and more creative types of photos.

London Documentary Family 2019 Anaruivophotography 3

It’s something to remember them by.

It’s hard to admit this, but your pet won’t be around forever. We’re all hoping that our pets will be around for many years to come. But when they pass, you’ll get to enjoy looking back at images of them with your family. It’s great to get those photo opportunities before it’s too late. Photos will immortalize our time with our pawesome babies and will help with the healing process after we lose them.

              London-Maternity-Photoshoot-Anaruivophotography

              Because they are cute!

              Enough said.

A Birthday Party in a Bus – Brigit’s Afternoon Tea

The day we were born is always a special day for us! We often spend weeks, if not months, planning on how to spend our special day. For most of us, we celebrate our birthdays by holding a party and inviting our friends and family. For others, they prefer to travel and go on an adventure.

Back when I was a child, I used to spend the days before my birthday dreaming of the food, games, and gifts I was going to have. I enjoyed seeing all my loved ones come together. Until now, I still get very excited about birthday celebrations. In fact, I love capturing them since there’s so much to memorialize and remember!

                Catalina Birthdayparty 2019 3

Today, I am thrilled to share with you the awesome and distinctive way this 11-year-old celebrated her birthday!

Catalina, the lovely celebrant, chose to hop on a bus with her mom and three of her friends for a fun and intimate celebration. They experienced a lovely afternoon sipping tea, eating cake, and sampling sandwiches. While doing all that, they were also taking in the best sites London has to offer!

The unique tour is from B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus London Tour. Their vintage double-decker bus drove around Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, St James’s Park, Hyde Park, The Royal Albert Hall, Marble Arch, Nelson’s Column, Downing Street and more.

This celebration was undoubtedly an extraordinary event. I loved capturing every moment of it. Everyone was all smiles throughout the ride! The kids were genuine and hilarious.

Check-out my top tips for photographing birthday parties in my blog.

If you are celebrating a birthday soon and you want it documented, or if you have any questions, please drop me a note – I’d love to continue the conversation.

Summer in London – Family Documentary

English Summer weather is quite tricky – we can have literally 4 seasons in one day – but it’s wonderful to have warmer days and to enjoy London parks. My families have been scheduling and re-scheduling in an effort to find a beautiful sunny day but sometimes to wait it’s not possible and we work with what we have. Life goes on and life with children feels that goes even faster.

We are so lucky with this glorious day of sun, the family enjoyed a morning in their garden. This session reminded me of my own children as they have the same age-gap and oh dear it’s not easy! So much fun running after them…

Don’t wait to book your session!

If you want to give a family documentary session a try, or if you have any questions about these types of sessions, please drop me a note – I’d love to continue the conversation.
