Snapshots of our Summer – Surf and ice-creams

This Is Our Life 2019 Web 34

It feels like Summer was ages ago while I am writing this post; it is raining cats and dogs in London.
Our Summer was in Portugal, as usual, with our family and most of the time we spent it in our little beach cottage near the Atlantic. This place is a renowned famous surf spot, and I thought this year would be an excellent opportunity for the girls to surf.
I was a little bit afraid, to be honest, but they just loved it, and now I am already thinking about the next time!

These are some snapshots of our holiday in this extraordinary place. Until next time.

Check some snapshots from the last years here and here.

100 days of Summer – a personal story in motion

100 days of Summer is a personal project I do every year for my daughters. I compile short videos of our Summer holidays to honour our love for the sun and the sea.

Summer now feels like ages ago as we are experiencing freezing days here in London but as the season changes, new adventures and new lovely moments are yet to be captured.

Check-out the pictures I took from our time in Portugal in my other post too. And the ones in Dubai here.

See the video from last year here.

I hope you have a wonderful week. We are getting ready for Halloween!

      Snapshots from our Summer 2018

Oh, Summer…it seems it was such a long time ago…! Coming back to these images and editing them gave me a strike of homesickness, especially today in London where there is no light.

      We call it SAUDADE.

A feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia that is supposedly characteristic of the Portuguese temperament.

I love living in a busy, chaotic and culturally rich city like London but my heart will always be by the beach, in this little village near westernmost point of Europe. Here you fall asleep with the sound of the waves, where the ocean is never calm and the days are long.

Baleal Beach, my happy place – London Family Photographer

      – Baleal Beach

Baleal is an island located 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) north of Peniche, in the western region of Portugal is separated from the mainland by a tombolo. At the extremity of the island you can find the inaccessible ilhota das Pombas and the ilhéu de Fora.

The coastal shape, namely the bay and northern strip of coast associated with Baleal create unique conditions in Europe for the practice of surfing and body boarding. Over the years I have seen Baleal becoming a major holiday and surfing spot. Although it’s still a little hidden tourist gem, today there are lots of surfing schools and water sports shops.

Baleal beach is a place very close to my heart. I come here almost every year since I was born, sometimes with my parents but most of the time with my grandparents during Summer holidays. I have so many good memories with my brother and the friends we made. We could spend hours at the beach playing games, making sand castles, exploring the rocks, looking out for little creatures, shells and stones and as we got older we adventure ourselves for what Baleal is world-famous: surfing and body boarding.

      – Simply dreamy

This area of Portugal can show quite surprisingly weather conditions therefore you never know how the weather will be tomorrow. You can have beautiful sunny beach days in a row but time to time there are cloudy days when it feels good to wear a sweatshirt. That’s what I wanted to capture when I came here in August. We had a lovely day, surrounded by low clouds and quite humid so consequently we were just able to spot the surfers waiting and catching the waves. Everything looks like a dream, because it can feel that way: a serene, peaceful atmosphere where you can only hear the sound of the waves and where you can feel the most unique smell of the ocean.

      – Glorious Sunset

When the sun sets near the water is a glorious moment and the west coast of Portugal has the most beautiful sunsets. These pictures show another side of Baleal: exceptional sunny days when you can stay at the beach until late. I was very lucky this day, it was warm and the sky presented the most gorgeous colours.

“There’s a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they’re absolutely free. Don’t miss so many of them.”
      ― Jo Walton

Holiday Family Photography – This is our life #1 – London Family Photographer

Holiday Travel Family Photography This Is Our Life 1 A Personal Project

After almost a month enduring the not that lovely London weather I could’t help but feel nostalgic when I finally edited my summer holidays pictures.  I spent summer with my daughters in Portugal and I took my camera to document our carefree sunny days.

August was a magical month – we spent our time in my home country mostly either at my parents’ or at our beach house. The girls had lots of fun and days were super relaxed – running around barefoot after the dogs, riding bikes, diving in the pool, and trying new things everyday.

It somewhat felt like my childhood summer days in the 90s. I remember the excitement of having three whole months to enjoy after school had ended. Some days we just wondered around the garden with the dog and built imaginary friends out of old stuff my dad collected in the garage. I feel very luck my kids can start to create the same good childhood memories.

        – Pool days

My dad set up a small pool in the backyard to help us cope with very high temperatures – it can get as hot as 43 degrees. The girls love water and the excitement is clear in their faces. Isabel was confident in the water, she has now been able to swim underwater for some time. Melanie loves to splash around and I was able to capture her together with her cousin having loads of fun.

        – Lisbon and the Aquarium

We visited Lisbon a few times but I didn’t really want to carry my DSLR camera around. The only exception was when we visited the Oceanarium – a lovely place to capture pictures of your kids with all the gorgeous blue behind them. August can be very crowded but I still managed to take some clear shots. I particularly love their faces overwhelmed by the grandiosity of the huge aquarium walls.

        – Baleal Beach

This place is very important to me and I will be writing more about it in a separate post. This is a fairly famous surf spot and the ocean therefore can be a little wild and cold, but it’s an amazing place for families – the white sand beach is long and wide and it has tons of little rocks and dunes to explore. The smell of the ocean is extraordinary and hard to find nowadays. My girls had the time of their lives.

        – Family and friends

This is also a month to spend valuable time with family and friends. We are lucky both grandparents live in the same town so it’s easy to be together. Living in London without family can sometimes be hard so we try to compensate during the holidays.
